Happy Birthday!

The tenth anniversary of the so-called “Burda Buddies” made for a fun and lively event at the Media Lounge. Chairwoman Carolin Rottländer welcomed all parents currently involved in the association as well as their little ones, called bears, hedgehogs and horses, depending on their respective kindergarten group.

“It all began at an office Christmas party—but don’t get me wrong: We were already pregnant at that time,” former chairwoman Bettina Bäumlisberger recalled tongue-in-cheek. “We were absolutely convinced of our idea and this is how we argued the managing board into backing us.”

Friend and supporter Helmut Markwort recollects “some interesting news, but of the kind that was not meant for publication,” brought to his office by several young colleagues within just a few weeks. “Obviously, you are always happy about offspring—keeping the social system going—but I really did not want to lose staff.”

Following some discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of a concept splitting costs between parents, city and company, the FOCUS boss finally managed to convince the management board: The “Burda Buddies” was born.

Having navigated a variety of bureaucratic obstacles, December 01, 1997, marked the project launch: “We carried our kids in baby-slings while we cleaned and mopped the floors, getting everything up and running within just six months,” Bäumlisberger remembers. In the beginning, “Burda Buddies” had seven members, aged eight to twelve months. Later up to 200 names were on the waiting list for the company-related day-care center. The facility’s main feature is its flexible opening hours which cater to the needs of working parents. "This is the best staff retention initiative ever, because appreciation counts more than anything else,” the FOCUS editor believes.

Both parents’ voluntary commitment and funding by the city and the company are essential prerequisites for the success of “Burda Buddies”. “But when it comes down to it, it all depends on our bosses. I really appreciate the opportunity to structure my work in the most favorable way possible,” Sabine Fuchs compliments her department.

“I met my best friend there and I really enjoyed going swimming together,” recalls Anja Bäumlisberger, one of the first “Burda Buddies” kids. At present, 54 members play, tinker and have lunch together.
